Magnesium, with the element symbol Mg, is a metal element that exhibits various desirable properties for additive manufacturing (AM). Its low density, high specific strength, and excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, combined with good damping characteristics, hydrogen storage capacity, and biocompatibility, make it a promising material for various applications including aerospace, rail transportation, new energy, and biomedicine.

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, allows for the creation of complex structures with precision and customization. Magnesium, due to its unique properties, can be processed using AM techniques to produce lightweight yet strong components. This is particularly advantageous in fields where weight reduction is crucial, such as aerospace, where every gram counts.

However, there are also challenges associated with using magnesium in AM. Magnesium has a low melting and boiling point, high vapor pressure, and strong oxidizing properties, which can lead to the formation of pores, cracks, and inclusions within the fabricated components. These defects can compromise the performance and reliability of the final product.

To overcome these challenges, researchers are exploring various material modification and process optimization techniques. These efforts aim to improve the printability of magnesium and reduce the formation of defects during the AM process. Additionally, the development of new AM techniques specifically tailored for magnesium is also underway.

In conclusion, magnesium has great potential for use in additive manufacturing due to its favorable properties. While challenges remain, ongoing research and technological advancements are expected to address these issues and enable the widespread application of magnesium in AM.
