  • Poor mechanical and fatigue strength as well as a high degradation rate negatively affect the mechanical integrity of the magnesium-based implants and hence restrict their applications. To address these limitations, alloying magnesium using various alloying elements has been utilized. Moreover, the addition of reinforcements into the magnesium and its alloys in order to develop magnesium matrix biocomposites could be a promising approach to address these limitations by noticeably enhancing the mechanical and corrosion properties, simultaneously. Despite all studies conducted in recent years, corrosion and corrosion-fatigue behavior of magnesium biocomposites still need further examination.

Although there are some review papers that discuss the corrosion, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties of magnesium-based biocomposites, until now, no attempt has been conducted on the fatigue, and corrosion-fatigue of these materials. Most bone implants are subjected to cyclic loading in a physiological environment during their service time inside the body.

The fatigue strength in such conditions could be far below the static and fatigue strengths in air, which may lead to miscalculation of the implant lifetime. Due to the lack of a comprehensive understanding in the literature regarding the corrosion, fatigue, and corrosion-fatigue behavior of magnesium-based biocomposites in physiological environments.
