When we add a piece of magnesium (Mg) to the HCl solution, a chemical reaction occurs between magnesium and the H+ ions in the solution. During this reaction, magnesium atoms lose two electrons and become Mg²⁺ ions, while the H+ ions gain an electron to become hydrogen atoms. These hydrogen atoms combine into hydrogen gas (H₂) molecules, which then bubble out of the solution.

  • In a highly magnified view of an HCl solution, we see H+ and Cl⁻ ions. Adding magnesium (Mg) leads to a reaction where Mg loses two electrons and becomes Mg²⁺ ions, while the H+ ions gain an electron to become hydrogen atoms, forming hydrogen gas (H₂).

  • In a highly magnified view of a HCl (hydrochloric acid) solution, we will see HCl molecules dissociated into ions, as it is a strong acid. That means we will have H+ (or more precisely, H₃O⁺) ions and Cl⁻ ions in the solution. You can picture them as small spheres or circles, representing the ions distributed in the solution.

Balancing chemical equations is essential in chemistry as it ensures that the principle of conservation of mass is obeyed: the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides of the equation.

By balancing the equation, we ensure that on both sides, we have two hydrogen, one magnesium, and two chloride atoms.
This balance is crucial to understand because it reflects that mass is neither created nor destroyed in a reaction, merely transformed. Every chemical reaction can be balanced similarly, following simple rules of maintaining equal numbers of each type of atom on both sides.
